Understanding the Perils of Plasticity

A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. (James 1:8)

When we’re double-minded, we’re not focused. We become actors playing flawless characters. Human nature is to publicly “put on” what we think is the very best version of ourselves so as not to show our true vulnerabilities and struggles. Whether it be with friends, family, at work, or even in church.

This is a fallen and prideful thinking. Jesus led by example. We have to tear down the walls and be transparent.

Many people get this concept wrong, this does not mean to “tell it like it is” or “be real” at the expense of others. It means to be completely vulnerable with others because you find your confidence and strength in the Lord, who’s spirit is dwelling within you.

God loves us just as we are, there’s no need to change anything.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.
(Psalm 139:14)

The main reason we might desire to re-create ourselves is because we truly don’t realize how wonderfully and marvelously made we are.

God calls us to be transparent and vulnerable with each other for the betterment of ourselves and others. Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. (James 5:16)

As believers, we truly should be more concerned with what God thinks than what people think. We’ll never be “real” with ourselves as we’re being plastic with others.

With plasticity comes adversity and misery. We have to start with being more self-aware of what our struggles and weaknesses are.  We cannot deal with issues that we won’t acknowledge exist.  A prideful mind is poisonous.  Only with this realization can come our true transformation.

We must decide to be the same on the outside as we are on the inside.  We first have to want to change and then take action.  The more transparent we become with others, the less we’ll need to be plastic.  Once we acknowledge our issues, we are then challenged to make changes.  We have to develop the mindset that our weakness is not permanent.

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of His return is drawing near.  (Hebrews 10:25)

Decide today to begin to live a life of impeccable integrity.  If we refuse to give up our old life, we won’t ever get to live our new life.  Jesus never presented himself in a way that wasn’t 100% true.

It’s time to admit our faults and start getting rid of them instead of hiding them.
